Weapon Permit Applications

Effective 2/3/23:

You must telephone the Sheriff’s Office before to coming to the office at 641-464-3921. New procedures require you to make an appointment with the Civil Clerk handling weapons permits. If you do not do this you may not be able to renew at the office at that time. Renewals may be done 30 days prior to your permit expiring and up to 30 days after your permit expires.  New permit applicants must review Chapter 724.9 for proper documentation of training to provide proof of training. Please review the information below to become familiar with the Chapter 724 law. New applications for a Permit to Carry or Permit to Acquire must be in person at the Sheriff’s Office.

Weapons Permit Office hours are Monday – Friday from 9:00 am - 4:00pm. A valid driver’s license or non-operator’s identification card with your current address is required.

                                   PROCEDURES FOR WEAPONS “CARRY PERMIT” AND “PERMIT TO PURCHASE WEAPONS”

A Non-Professional Permit to Carry authorizes the permit holder to carry weapons with no restrictions as set by the Iowa Code. A Non-Professional Permit to Carry is valid for five years from the issuing date.  A Permit to Carry will also allow you to purchase, you will not need a Permit to Acquire in addition.

Application procedures for a Non-Professional Permit to Carry a weapon: 

  1. Apply to the sheriff in the county of their residence.
    2. Submit a completed application form in person to the sheriff’s office.
    3. Submit a completed certified handgun safety training course certificate or military DD-214 form. Training certificate can not be more than 2 years old. (Certificate required for first-time applicants only)
    4. Provide a State- issued form of identification.
    5. Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
    6. Must meet all applicable requirements in Iowa Code Chapter 724.
    7. Pay the required fee: $50.00 for a new permit and $25.00 for a renewal permit. Cash or check accepted; no debit or credit cards. When paying with cash, exact change is required.

The Ringgold County Sheriff’s Office will process the permit and submit the information to the State of Iowa.  If approved, you will receive your card in the mail from a printing company the State has hired.  It can take up to 30 days to process your permit.

In order to purchase a handgun, an Iowa resident must obtain an Iowa Permit to Acquire if the resident does not already have a Permit to Carry. A Permit to Acquire authorizes the holder to acquire pistols/revolvers; however, this does not authorize the holder to carry a weapon. An Iowa Permit to Acquire is valid for five years after the date of application and is valid throughout the state of Iowa.

  1. Apply to the sheriff in the county of their residence.
    2. Submit a completed application form in person to the sheriff’s office.
    3. Provide a State-issued form of identification.
    4. Applicant must be at least 21 years of age.
    5. Must meet all applicable requirements in Iowa Code Chapter 724.
    6. Pay the required fee; $25.00. Cash or check accepted; no debit or credit cards. When paying with cash, exact change is required.
